Reading the report

Four kinds of followers, only one you're paying for.

Every audience is a mix. The report splits a creator's followers into four groups so you can see how many real people will actually see your product.

Real followers

People with normal accounts who follow a manageable number of others. They see the creator's posts and are the audience you're buying.

Suspicious

Bots, bought followers and accounts that behave like them: no photo, no posts, random usernames, sudden bulk follows.

Mass followers

Accounts following more than 1,500 others. Their feeds are so crowded that they rarely see any single creator's posts.

Influencers

Accounts with big followings of their own, like other creators, brands and pages. Real, but not your customers.

We flag an account when fewer than 55% of followers look real or more than 10% look suspicious. Over 20% suspicious means high fake follower risk. Under 40% real means low real reach, even when few followers are bots. Audience splits are statistical estimates, not platform data.

How to spot fake followers yourself

The checker does the heavy lifting, but a two-minute look at the profile tells you a lot too:

  • Open the follower list. Scroll past the first screen and look for accounts with no photo, no posts or a username that's mostly random numbers.
  • Read the comments. Real comments mention the post. Rows of "🔥🔥🔥" from empty accounts are a warning sign.
  • Compare views to followers. Fake accounts don't watch. A creator with 100K followers whose Reels get 900 views has an audience problem.
  • Check growth history. A jump of thousands of followers in a day, with no viral post behind it, usually means bought followers.
  • Ask for audience screenshots. Instagram Insights and TikTok Analytics show a creator's top countries and age ranges. Ask for one taken that day.

FAQ

Common questions.

How does the fake follower checker work?
Enter a public Instagram or TikTok username. We pull audience data for that account from a creator analytics provider, which sorts its followers into real people, suspicious accounts, mass followers and other influencers. You see that split along with engagement rate, average likes and comments, and where the audience lives.
What counts as a fake follower?
Bots, bought followers and accounts that behave like them. They usually have no profile photo, few or no posts, a random-looking username, and follow far more accounts than follow them back. The report also separates mass followers, real people who follow so many accounts that they rarely see any one creator's posts.
What's a good real-follower percentage?
Almost every account has some bots and inactive followers, including accounts that never bought any. We flag an account when fewer than 55% of its followers look real or more than 10% look suspicious. Over 20% suspicious means high fake follower risk. Under 40% real means low real reach, usually because many followers are mass followers rather than bots.
Should I work with a creator who has some fake followers?
Often, yes. A few bots turn up on almost every account. Look at the whole picture: engagement, views, and whether the real audience matches your customers. If the audience is real but smaller than the follower count suggests, base your offer on average views rather than followers.
Can creators check their own account?
Yes. Checking your own audience is a good way to see what brands see before you pitch them. If you're a creator, join Jem to apply for paid brand campaigns.
Is it free?
Yes. You get 3 free checks a day with no sign-up. Add your email for more checks that day. When you're ready to book creators, Jem Social has a free 7-day trial.
